For his tenth album, the human metronome of Afrobeat has pulled out all the stops. At his side are the trio of producers The Jazzbastards and fellow world-class musicians, including Albarn, who continues to build pioneering bridges between Africa and today’s music scene.
On Film of Life, Tony Allen has given us a true self-portrait, an overview of his rich and exemplary career that brings together bebop, Afrobeat, jazz and psychedelic pop. As Fela Kuti has claimed, "Without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat." For the wizard of Lagos, who has always thought of his drums “as an orchestra” and who likes “to make them sing”, Film of Life marks the pinnacle of his achievement.
Allen, "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived" (Brian Eno), wraps up an 8-city tour with the Chicago Afrobeat Project this week, featured in Modern Drummer, Okay Africa and more. The remaining concerts are Thursday, September 11 at The Haunt in Ithaca, NY and Friday, September 12 at Johnny D’s in Somerville, MA.
NEW SINGLE “GO BACK" IN THE PRESS:
#5 on The 32nd Uncut Playlist of 2014
- Uncut Magazine
"Embarking on the difficult subject of the tragedy of exile, ‘Go Back’ is more than a mere
exchange of courtesies; their heartfelt sincerity is undeniable, Albarn’s melodic finesse perfectly
attuned to the legendary suppleness of Allen’s rhythms."
- Glide Magazine
“"Go Back" definitely has a cinematic sound and can easily be used for a film's soundtrack…
Allen's percussion along with the funky bass and horns [and] the strings are a very nice touch
and add to the sensual and melodic groove of the song.”
- Soul Bounce
“Allen's flawless drum rhythms shine through an exuberant combination of horns
and a smooth bass line…When merged with Albarn's contemporary vocals, the song
becomes a beautiful blend of agelessness and modernity."
- Baeble Music
“It is fantastic, irrespective of genre barriers…beautifully rhythmic”
- The Guardian
“The track is nothing short of beautiful — a languid, easy,
sun-drenched thing that sounds especially great on a hot summer day”
“The smooth, syncopated rhythms sway and roll…as pianos elegantly purr chords,
and Damon holds melancholy court.”
- Afropop Worldwide
“’Go Back’ occupies a space that’s practically timeless.
The medley of rich horns, sly guitar work, and steady drums”
- Consequence of Sound
