Sasha Rozhdestvensky & Jeremy Menuhin Release the World Première Recording of Shostakovich's Unfinished Sonata for Violin and Piano
Available November 13, First Hand Records presents violinist Sasha Rozhdestvensky and pianist Jeremy Menuhin in the world première commercial recording of Shostakovich's unfinished Sonata for Violin and Piano. This recording includes an extra 28 bars of a development section found in Shostakovich’s original manuscript that does not appear in the published score. Completed by an 11 bar coda written by conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky, the work is coupled with the Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.43. The program also contains world première commercial recordings of Shostakovich's Andantino from the String Quartet No.4, his piano duet arrangement of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms and his transcription of Gaetano Braga's La Serenata.
Rozhdestvensky has been described by Yehudi Menuhin as "one of the most talented and refined violinists of his generation." Jeremy Menuhin is widely regarded for his artistry and the integrity of his interpretations. The New York Times hailed him as, "unfailingly lyrical, exemplary, exquisitely polished, yet directly expressive." Rozhdestvensky and Menuhin are joined here by pianist Mookie Lee-Menuhin, soprano Ilona Domnich (chosen by Opera Now magazine as one of The Top 10 High Flyers) and mezzo-soprano Alexandra Sherman (winner of the Joan Sutherland and ABC Young Performer of the Year awards). This is a must-have for any Shostakovich collection.
