Pianist Javier Perianes makes his Ravinia Debut!
A recipient of Spain’s National Music Prize, pianist Javier Perianes makes his Ravinia debut August 20, 2014 performing selections from his latest album, … les sons et les parfums, juxtaposing works by Chopin and Debussy. Both composers are well-known for delicate melodies and rollicking folk- and dance-inspired pieces, which are also the calling card of Perianes’s countryman Falla, whose music will close the program.
Perianes was the Artist in Residence at the 2012 Granada Festival and was in-residence at Teatro de la Maestranza with the Seville Orchestra during season 2012/13. He has performed in distinguished concert series throughout the world and records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi, where his releases include the Latin Grammy-nominated Falla. Noches en los Jardines de Espana.
In their review of … les sons et les parfums, BBC Music Magazine noted "Perianes has the range of nuance and color for both composers, with a warmth of tone and natural rubato. These are beautiful and engaging performances." ...les sons et les perfumes is pure musical seduction. The Guardian wrote, "Perianes plays with a poet's touch throughout and makes us listen anew.”
The pianist has a new recording of collected works of Mendelssohn, Romances sans paroles to be released in November. This program illustrates four essential qualities of the composer's music. Music stripped of all superfluity, including the literary aspect (Songs without Words); a gift for creating magical atmospheres (Rondo capriccioso); unconditional admiration for classical order; and, finally, a genuine veneration for Bach (Prelude and Fugue op.35).
