David Tennant and The Amazing Keystone Big Band's "Peter and the Wolf and Jazz!"
On September 11, Le Chant du Monde presents "Peter and the Wolf and Jazz!" narrated by David Tennant and performed by The Amazing Keystone Big Band. The Scottish actor Tennant is well known from his starring roles in the popular British television show Doctor Who, and also as Barty Crouch, Jr. in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In this fantastic jazz transcription of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and The Wolf, The Amazing Keystone Big Band takes the place of a classical orchestra, providing the musical elements essential to the telling of this classic story.
The booklet also portrays the story in a series of magnificent illustrations by the French artist Martin Jarrie. Commissioned in 2012 by the Festival Jazz à Vienne, this "non-classical" Peter and the Wolf aimed to introduce children to jazz. Prokofiev wrote the original work in 1936 to give young listeners an introduction to the instruments of the classical orchestra. Three-quarters of a century later, (with no small thanks to The Doctor), this new version will delight and inspire listeners of all ages.
In the four years since its creation, The Amazing Keystone Big Band has proved it can combine both the spirit of past great bands of the swing era with the open-mindedness and impertinent virtuosity of today’s Jazz. The band has had the opportunity to work and play with – and write music for – world famous artists such as Quincy Jones, Gregory Porter, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Rhoda Scott, Liz McComb and Michel Hausser.
